Davey Johnson’s facial hair

“If my facial hair looks bad,” Davey Johnson told reporters before Friday’s home game, “I decided I wouldn’t shave until we started hitting.”

To that point, the Nats had averaged 3.38 runs per game. In the four games since, they’ve scored 16 runs. But as of this writing, per current knowledge, Johnson still had not shaved.

“I figured I couldn’t get any uglier, so what the heck,” Johnson said on Friday. “Hopefully I can shave soon. I’ve never had a rally goatee. I’m not hairy enough to get one. Now it’s gray, you can’t hardly see it unless you get these close-ups that I get after the game, so I apologize. You can’t change the shape of a watermelon anyway. I’ll be like everybody else around here. Maybe I can change the luck.”

If not, he’ll certainly prompt many blog posts. Above, you can see Johnson’s appearance before Friday’s game. Here’s how he looked after Friday’s game.
