Donte’ Stallworth: ‘Literally, my butt caught on fire’

The Redskins signed wide receiver Donte’ Stallworth yesterday, three months after he was injured in a hot air balloon accident. The balloon carrying Stallworth and his girlfriend clipped some power lines, catching fire and causing serious burns to those in the basket.

“It felt exactly like the cartoons,” Stallworth told the media on Tuesday. “When you see people getting electrocuted on cartoons, that’s exactly what it felt like.

“Literally, my butt caught on fire.”

Months removed from the incident, Stallworth was willing to joke about it this week. But he acknowledged the seriousness of the freak accident.

“Ten years of playing professional football and I’ve never been carted off the field,” he recounted. “I’ve never even been helped off the field. If I had a knee injury, I was able to get up, walk away on my own. And I go on a hot air balloon, something that seems very peaceful for two hours, and I’m getting airlifted to a hospital [with my] life on the line.”
