Martell Webster calls D.C. ‘home’

When Martell Webster walked onto the court at Verizon Center halfway through the team’s open practice last night, it was to a round of applause by the fans who had gathered to check out this year’s summer minicamp.

Clearly a fan favorite, Webster spent some time talking to fans, shaking hands and kissing babies. After practice, the Portland resident chatted with the media and admitted that the signing of Otto Porter initially made him a little nervous about his spot on the team. It was a talk with Wizards General Manager Ernie Grunfeld that put him at ease.

“When I was here, I was staying in a hotel and I’m like, ‘This feels right. I feel like I’m home,'” said Webster, who had traveled back to D.C. for rehab a few weeks ago. “So the fact that Ernie came out and talked to me and said, ‘[The Porter signing] doesn’t change anything,’ I was like, I knew it was gonna happen. I knew I was going to come back here.”

Webster is expected to sign his contract today, and fans can give partial credit to his wife, Courtney, for his return.

“My wife had a heavy influence on me coming back here, I’ll tell you that,” he said. “She loved it here. My oldest daughter, she loved the school that she went to, so we’re putting her back in that school this year. It felt like a second home to them. And now it’s going to be a primary home.”

“They’re excited,” he continued. “They’re ecstatic and can’t wait.”
