In the new journalism, you don’t actually have to leave the Cleveland Park Library for training camp; instead, you can just wait there until someone (ok, WJLA’s Alex Parker) posts a photo of a duck mascot in an RGIII jersey, and then a local barbeque hangout will post a video (thanks, @recordsANDradio), and you can call the barbeque joint, and they’ll tell you the mascot is actually repping the nearby car wash, “Car Pool,” which regularly uses the duck mascot, but only outfitted it in burgundy-and-gold to herald the arrival of Redskins training camp.
“People love it,” said a Car Wash manager, when I called to confirm this was his RGIII-themed duck. “We’re just trying to represent the Skins’ most popular player.”
Very quickly I realized I didn’t have any more questions about the duck in the RGIII jersey, so we hung up. I would have been much happier had the duck been unaffiliated with a local business. The world needs more authentic duck mascots in RGIII jerseys.
Still, I think this first few hours of Richmond training camp has produced more oddities than a typical camp opening day in Ashburn. So I’ll declare it a success.
