The first 15 or so minutes of ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” broadcast this week captured the RGIII phenomenon well. First there was a segment with Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden talking about how the Redskins have fared without Robert Griffin III, and then came a lengthy Lisa Salters report on RGIII’s health, complete with a nice clear shot of his new “Operation Patience” T-shirt.
In between — at least where I was watching — came a Robert Griffin III ad for Subway, featuring Robert Griffin III in an Adidas shirt. The ad included three things every right-thinking American loves: electronic football, deli meats, and Robert Griffin III.
Incidentally, Monday night’s game earned a 9.3 rating on ESPN and an 8.7 rating on WDCA in the D.C. market, according to ESPN. The game got a 5.5 rating on ESPN and a 22.3 rating on WATE-ABC in the Pittsburgh market.
