Fred Smoot was filling in for Danny on 106.7 The Fan yesterday, and the former Redskin did his best to be optimistic about the team’s 0-2 start. But first he had to get a little doom out of the way.
After Holden ran down a laundry list of defensive horribleness, Smoot added to the pain.
“And I’m sure we’re leading the league in plays over 20 yards given up by the defense,” he added. “I’m sure we’re leading the league in touchdown passes given up in two games. I’m sure we’re leading the league in, probably, getting sacked, getting RGIII sacked, so, it’s just bad right now. And I think people have to understand the time will end and we just have to ride it out. It’ll turn around.
“It will get better,” he continued. “It can only get better. It can’t get any worse.”
And then lightning crashed down from the sky and a voice from the universe cried out, “Oh, yes it can.” Let’s hope Smoot’s not eating his words next week.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT
Davey Johnson, on yesterday’s postponement:
“There was a lot of guys that didn’t want to play, thought it was kind of disrespectful to play. It’s right across the street. To be able to hear cheering, and supposedly they’re using a parking lot for families — I don’t know. It should just be quiet for today.”

WORD SLIP OF THE DAY
Mike Tirico called the Redskins, the “Washingtons” during Monday Night Football, which caused many to assume he was making a political statement. He was not.
.@awfulannouncing sorry no political statements here, just tripped over a word. I called the team the Redskins during last weeks game.
