It’s a pretty big week for Chris Baker. Aside from the fact that it’s the storied Dallas week, the Redskins lineman celebrated his 25th birthday on Tuesday. But the excitement started over the weekend, when Baker proposed to girlfriend Jamila Phillips while on a bye-week getaway in Miami.

“We’ve been dating for the last three, four years,” Baker explained. “So it was about that time for us to settle down and start a family up.”

Baker got the ring on Wednesday before leaving town. As with most proposals, he had a plan, but he abandoned it after taking Phillips to see the marriage-themed movie, “Baggage Claim.”

“My grand plan was to do it at dinner the next night,” he told me. “Order some dessert and give the waiter the ring to put in the dessert, and when the dessert came ask her to marry me. But the movie set the tone, so I said, ‘Let me just do this now.’”

Taking advantage of the mood, Baker waited until they were alone to pop the question.

“We went back to the hotel, had a couple of drinks and I got down on both knees,” he laughed. “I didn’t know which one to get on so I said, let me get down on both. She was laying down and she turned around and went, ‘Oh my gosh, is this for real? Yes, yes, yes!’ So it was cool.”

The two have already discussed wedding plans and are trying to decide between a summer wedding this year or a spring wedding next.

“If we do it this June or July, you have to plan a bachelor party, engagement party,” Baker said. “There’s so much stuff to do in the next couple of months, so we might push it back to next spring.”

He’s less than a week betrothed, but his teammates are already chiming in with marriage advice.

“They told me, ‘Beware. You’re not going to be able to go out as [much as you want] anymore,’” he joked. “But that’s a good thing. She’s really cool. A great girl.”

As for the adage “good things come in threes,” Baker is hoping that rings true.

“Birthday, engagement, big game,” he observed. “Everything has gone well so far.”

Only one left.
