Caps defenseman Steve Oleksy gave what was easily one of the most interesting “Last Thing” interviews I’ve done. Some of his answers deserve more space that this format gives, so stay tuned in the coming days for more.
Also, his answer for “last animal you pet” was definitely a first.
Steve Oleksy, what was the last…
Movie you saw
“Lawless.” I’ve seen it quite a few times, but it was the last one I saw. On game days I usually tend to watch a movie between pregame skate and our game, so I always throw something on and “Lawless” was the last one I threw on.
Book you read
“Scar Tissue.” It’s about Anthony Kiedis, the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Thing you cooked
Chicken cordon bleu was the last thing I cooked. I love to cook. It’s one of the things I’ve really taken a passion to early on in my career. My roommate in the offseason was actually a chef, so I picked up some good tips from him. My mom and my dad are both really good cooks. It’s fun, and the final product is a little bit of a reward.
Song you downloaded
Danny Brown, “Dip.”
Vacation you went on
I don’t get many of those, but the last vacation I went on was this summer. I flew out to Saskatchewan to see Braden Holtby for six days. I went out there for him, played in a golf tournament and went to the lake for a couple of days.
Dream you had
I’d have to say scoring a goal was probably the last dream I had. I woke up and was like, aww, that was a good feeling. I tried to go back to sleep and replay it, but it didn’t work.
Person who made you laugh
John Erskine’s a funny guy. Sitting next to him, we have some good times. He’s a funny character. Obviously Jason Chimera makes you laugh, day in and day out.
Person you texted
My father on the way into the rink. I said, “Thank you. Have a good day at work.”
Thing you took a picture of
The view of the water out of my apartment.
Time you cried
I seriously can’t remember the last time I cried. I’m not a crier.
Time you were scared
Probably have to be two summers ago. I was at the Stratosphere and I went on the rides atop the Stratosphere and it was pretty nerve-wracking. The one that puts you over the edge, you’re just staring straight down. It’s pretty freaky.
Animal you pet
A kangaroo. I went to visit my friend in Kansas and they had a petting zoo there where you can interact with all the animals, which was pretty cool. I got to pet kangaroos, lemurs, I got to feed giraffes. It was super cool, but the kangaroo was one of the coolest.
