Let’s see: yup! The Redskins narrative still seems fairly distinct from anything anyone is saying publicly on the matter!
Here was Sonny Jurgensen, during ESPN 980’s excellent Sunday pre-game show, when asked by host Kevin Sheehan whether he believes Mike Shanahan’s days here are numbered.
“Do you have anybody in mind?” Jurgensen asked. “Who are you going to bring in? No, I don’t think it’s a done deal by any means. I think that they will sit down and talk. I was talking with Dan yesterday about it, and he likes Mike Shanahan. He does. They play golf together. They get along. There’s no problems there. Yes, they will sit down and talk about what they’re doing and who they’re doing it with….”
“They do. They do get along,” Jurgensen later said, when Sheehan pressed him on that point. “And [Snyder has] stayed out of it. Everybody talks about [Shanahan] doesn’t like the way that Dan treats the quarterback. I’ve heard that. Nobody said anything about the way he treated the quarterback last year, did they? Because they won. It’s all about losing. All about losing. They’re 3-10. It’s an embarrassment, because they thought they were gonna be a lot better, things were going to go well this year. I was just telling [Chuck Sapienza], God, way until April and May, we’ll be going to the Super Bowl. Every year. You just wait. It’s not our time of the year in December.”
So, could a contract extension even be on the table?
“Yes, it could be,” Jurgensen said, without chuckling. “It could be. I’m not sure. I think it has a lot to do with Mike, what Mikes wants to do, if Mike wants to continue, if Mike wants to make some adjustments in his staff. There are a lot of things that go into it that I think they have to work out. I saw something today about Kyle not being consulted about the sitting down, the benching, call it what you want, he’s not in favor of Robert being sat down. Well, excuse me? I didn’t know that he had to be consulted.”
And are the chances better than 50-50 that Shanahan returns?
“Yes,” Jurgensen said. “I think he will come back. And I have no insight in any way; that’s just an opinion, and that’s from talking with him. I don’t think it’s something that is too late [to repair]. It’s not. I think that he can coach this football team, and I don’t see anybody better than Mike Shanahan to coach this football team. He knows this football team; matter of fact he’s responsible for this football team, and he’ll tell you that.”
