Lest there be any question that Bryce Harper remains one of baseball’s most marketable names, observe this: Major League Baseball and MTV will announce on Friday that Harper will be the featured guest for the debut episode of “Off the Bat From the MLB Fan Cave,” a new weekly program that will premiere next week.

The 30-minute series will be hosted by MTV personalities Sway, Fat Joe, Chris Distefano and Melanie Iglesias; it will focus on baseball’s intersection with pop culture and entertainment.

The show — which will air Tuesday nights at 11 p.m. on MTV2 — will include on-location features with players about their off-the-field interests. But there will also be on-set player interviews. And since the show tapes at the MLB Fan Cave in New York City, the guests will mostly come from teams visiting the Yankees or the Mets. The Nats, of course, open their season against the Mets next week.

The series will be executive produced by David Ortiz; other MLB stars — including Adam Jones — will executive produce individual episodes. Here’s the trailer.

Via Syracuse.com comes the story of Jess Willey, a Syracuse woman going through chemo to fight Leukemia. Here’s an excerpt:

Thanks to some backstage planning by her uncle, Frank Mansfield, who works at Washington’s spring training park, Willey got the VIP treatment from Nationals manager Matt Williams as well as on-field meetings with several of the players….

One of Mansfield’s jobs at the park is to drive a golf cart that transports players and coaches around the complex. One day, he noticed Williams, who is bald, sporting a T-shirt that read, “Balditude.”

It was a play on the Nationals’ catchphrase of “Natitude.” Since Willey lost her hair in chemotherapy, Mansfield asked Williams if he could have a shirt to give to her.

Williams went a lot farther. Get her down here for a game, he said, and she can be a special guest of the team. And, hey, Williams said, maybe she could throw out the first pitch?
