No “dagger” necessary as Wizards advance to second round

There was no “Dagger!” There wasn’t even a “Hinrich misses the free throw!” The most excited Comcast SportsNet’s Steve Buckhantz got in the final moments of the Wizards’ 75-69 series-clinching win over the Bulls in Game 5 was after Jimmy Butler missed a layup with 18 seconds to play and Chicago trailing by three.

Would you believe it?!

Three made free throws and two Washington offensive rebounds later, the Wizards dribbled out the clock on their first playoff series win since 2005.

“It’s knocked away, and that’s going to do it,” Buckhantz said after the Bulls turned the ball over for the 11th and final time. “The Washington Wizards. Déjà vu in D.C. For the first time since they beat this Bulls team nine years ago, the Wizards have advanced to round number two of the Eastern Conference playoffs, and they did it with a resounding, dominating, 4-1 series victory over Chicago.”

“I tell you Buck, it wasn’t that pretty,” Phil Chenier said. “You talk about two teams who were really outstanding defensively. Such a low-scoring game, but Washington coming up with possession after possession, running down loose balls, showing guts, showing that grit that you need to close out a game, and they got their win.”

As Dan put it in his Best and Worst: “That game had all the fluidity and grace of a tackling dummy drenched in apple cider and tossed off the top of an industrial dumpster.”

Yep. And would you believe it? The Wizards won!
