Nats’ Denard Span mocks Ian Desmond after failed attempt at Gatorade shower

Too slow. (Photo by Patrick Smith/Getty Images)

Hours after Manager Matt Williams defended putting Denard Span in the leadoff spot, the Nationals’ outfielder went 5 for 5 on Tuesday night to raise his average from .239 to .263 in Washington’s 9-4 win over Cincinnati.

It was a performance deserving of a postgame Gatorade shower. Ian Desmond tried, but the ever-alert Span, who became the sixth Nationals player to record five hits in a game, ran away from the liquid at the last second like he runs toward fly balls in the gap.

Here it is from another angle. It’s unclear whether Span was trying to save MASN reporter Dan Kolko or use him as a shield, but let’s be honest: The Gatorade would’ve blended right into Kolko’s Glacier Freeze-blue blazer.

Span was feeling pretty cocky after the game, calling out Desmond for his failed attempt. He may come to regret that.
