Is Wizards’ Martell Webster working part time at an ice cream shop?

We all have our own ways of coping with the disappointment and finding new ways to fill our time after a season spent following a favorite team comes to an end.

For players, there’s no shortage of places to go or things to do during the offseason, which is why it came as a surprise when Wizards swingman Martell Webster recently tweeted that he had started working part-time at Nicecream Factory in Clarendon. The shop, which opened three weeks ago, is the first brick-and-mortar location for the year-old company that uses liquid nitrogen to freeze its ice cream.

So does Webster really intend to spend part of his summer serving frozen treats? Well, not exactly. Webster wasn’t serving ice cream to actual customers in the video posted to Instagram; it was a promotional idea of Nicecream Factory marketing coordinator James Conti, who has known Webster since he was in third grade and Webster was in fifth grade in Seattle. They remained close, even as their basketball careers diverged.

“We’re almost brothers, so to speak,” said Conti, who played basketball at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. “He kept growing and I didn’t, and the rest is history.”

Conti, who sat with Webster’s wife and kids at every Wizards home playoff game, started his job at Nicecream Factory about a month ago. He said he’s working with Webster to find a weekend in the next month when, after a crash course in what it takes to be an ice cream crafter, he would work behind the counter in Clarendon for a few hours.

“He has a lot of time now, so we’re just trying to work with his schedule,” Conti said. “We’ll give him the basics. He’s a professional athlete, so I’m sure he can handle it.”
