“The Redskins announced that owner Daniel Snyder has promoted general manager Bruce Allen to the position of team president ,” Mike Jones reported over the weekend. “The announcement comes three days after Allen penned a letter defending the team’s nickname, and his title on that letter listed him as team president. Until then, Allen had held the title of executive vice president/general manager.”

Now, bearing in mind that the precise titles given to front-office people are probably symbolic, this still creates an interesting situation, as noted by @BurgundyBlog.

I double-checked his work. It’s true. Only two men in the NFL now hold the positions of president and general manager: Jerry Jones and Bruce Allen. (Jones, of course, has a third title: owner.)

Two NFL teams don’t have a general manager at all: the Patriots have Director of Player Personnel Nick Caserio, while the Bengals offer Senior Vice President / Player Personnel Pete Brown. Four Three teams — the Colts, Raiders and Rams — don’t have an official president.

But 26 of the 32 NFL teams have both a president and a general manager. And of those 26 teams, only Washington and Dallas have given those titles to the same person.
