Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy, who hit 30, 22 and 25 home runs in his first three seasons in Baltimore, hit his first home run of the 2014 season on Saturday in a 6-1 win over the Yankees.

Hardy, who hadn’t homered in 86 games dating from last September, got the silent treatment from his teammates in the dugout, and he saw it coming.

“As I was rounding third, I kind of looked in the dugout and no one had moved,” Hardy told reporters. “And I knew they were going to just sit there. Luckily, there was a bag just sitting there on the top step. So I grabbed it and figured I’d give myself a sunflower seed shower.”

Hardy’s teammates eventually joined him in celebration.

The Orioles have proven to be masters of responding to the post-homer silent treatment this season. Hardy’s sunflower seed shower was every bit as good as Chris Davis’s high-fiving celebration with imaginary friends.
