Fox Sports talked to Mike Shanahan about a broadcasting job

For several captivating weeks at the end of the 2013 season, Mike Shanahan became must-listen-to television, honest and expansive and fiery and impossible to ignore when behind a microphone. Turns out, we could have had a chance to catch more unscripted Shanahan in the 2014 season.

A Fox Sports spokesman confirmed a Tuesday report from 106.7 The Fan’s Grant Paulsen that the network had discussed an on-air role with Shanahan for the upcoming season.

“We did have a few conversations with Mike about a potential role but it didn’t work out for this season,” Fox Sports’s Dan Bell wrote in an e-mail.

Paulsen came across this news while traveling back to D.C. from Minneapolis; he ran into Dick Stockton in the Philadelphia airport. Paulsen asked Stockton whom his partner would be for the 2014 season.

“I was supposed to be working with Mike Shanahan, but it doesn’t sound like he wants to do it anymore,” Stockton responded.

The Redskins already have two “Monday Night Football” games this season, which means two chances for Jon Gruden to talk about the team coached by his brother. That, though, would have been nothing next to a game called by the coach who openly feuded with the franchise quarterback for the final few weeks of his tenure.
