Golden age of Redskins preseason football shows no signs of stopping

(By Jonathan Newton / The Washington Post)

NFL preseason results are mostly meaningless, sort of arbitrary, untethered from football realities, mere bits of trivia manufactured to suck up brain space that could otherwise be used on things like actually understanding the Orioles/MASN/MLB/Nats legal wrangling.

But heck, you could say the same thing about most sports stuff. So why not revel in it, at least for one morning in August?

Here’s the thing: The Redskins are on one of their best preseason runs in franchise history, certainly since preseason records began being kept in 1961. Some stats:

Winning Streak: The Redskins have now won seven straight preseason games dating back to the 2012 season. That’s the franchise’s longest preseason winning streak since at least 1961.

Preseason Openers: The Redskins have now won five straight preseason openers dating back to the start of the 2010 season. That’s the franchise’s longest preseason-opener winning streak since at least 1961.

Home Winning Streak: The Redskins have now won six straight preseason games at FedEx Field. This is a hard one to tabulate, because decades ago preseason games were played all over the place, and also because staring at past preseason venues for too long could cause an irreparable crisis in faith, but this is certainly the franchise’s longest preseason winning streak at its actual home venue since at least 1961.

Big Wins: The Redskins have now won four straight preseason games by at least 10 points. That’s only happened twice before in the modern era: spanning the 1988-89 preseasons, and in the final four games of the 1973 preseason (when everyone played six preseason games).

Scoring Points: The Redskins have now tallied at least 22 points in eight straight preseason games. That’s the first time the team has accomplished that feat since at least 1961. Washington has averaged 27.5 points per game over that span.

10-Game Record: The Redskins have now won nine of their past 10 preseason games. That’s happened only once before in the modern era, when the team won 10 of 11 from 1984 through 1987.

AFC East Domination: The Redskins have now won seven of their past eight preseason games against AFC East opponents, a span that includes four wins over the Bills, two wins over the Jets and a split against the Patriots. There is nothing you could do to make me figure out whether the Redskins have ever before taken 7 of 8 preseason games against a different division.
