Rally Pigeon sparks Nationals to win over Giants in series finale

The Nationals trailed the Giants 6-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday when an old friend made a triumphant return to Nationals Park.

Eight hits in the inning later, the Nationals had taken an 8-6 lead en route to a series-clinching 14-6 win. Rally Pigeon, who was trending on Twitter and featured on the Nationals Park scoreboard, was hailed as a feathered hero.

Rally Pigeon stuck around for the bottom of the seventh, showing no fear on this Danny Espinosa grounder up the middle.

Rally Pigeon got some love from Jayson Werth and Bryce Harper after the game, too.

“We’re playing good ball right now,” Werth told MASN’s Dan Kolko. “Need to keep it going. Fans have been great. We’ve got a Rally Pigeon. I mean, what more could you ask for?”

Rally Pigeon has made an appearance at Nationals Park before. Last September, he dropped in for Washington’s 11-2 win over the Phillies. While he isn’t the prettiest of birds, Rally Pigeon has an excellent memory. Do you think it’s coincidence that Denard Span was picked off first base during the sixth inning after terrorizing the poor guy last year?
