The Washington Capitals today unveiled the jerseys that they will wear for the NHL’s Winter Classic on Jan. 1, 2015, at Nationals Park. The red sweaters feature white shoulder stripes and a block blue W, which includes a silhouette of the Washington Monument and looks similar to the Washington Senators’ logo.
There’s no mention of an intentional nod to the Senators in the team release, which indicates the uniforms are meant to symbolize hockey’s deep roots in the District:
The stripes on the shoulders, waist and legs brings in elements of Washington professional hockey jerseys from the 1930’s, predating the Capitals’ formation in the 1970s. A large “W” on the front of the jersey, offset in blue to contrast the white Capitals wordmark, offers a unique look never seen before on Capitals jerseys.
Alex Ovechkin paid homage to the site of the Winter Classic and today’s announcement by wearing baseball pants.
