Verizon Center introduces new concessions, including crab cakes, fish and chips, expanded canned beer and bottomless souvenir sodas

With the Caps in the middle of their preseason schedule and the Wizards nearing the start of theirs, local fans finally are returning to Verizon Center. And they will find that Barry Trotz and Paul Pierce aren’t the only new attractions.

(That’s a professional introduction, people.)

As some fans already began noticing, there are a host of new concession items inside the downtown arena this season. We will have more on this story in the coming days, but for now, here’s a brief summary.

Main concession food

The non-premium sections, which are run by Aramark, will have several new food items. The Power Grill stands are now offering grass-fed cheddar burgers, a “Monumental” signature burger (with Monterey Jack, chipotle ranch, bacon and avocado spread on a brioche bun) and a crab cake sandwich.

The Sandwich District stand in section 110 will have New York-deli-style corned beef or pastrami with coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing or spicy mustard on rye, and also will have a build-your-own-salad feature.

And a Captain Ahab’s stand in section 120 will have fish and chips, fried shrimp and chips, and a crab cake sandwich. The fish and chips and shrimp and chips are also available as Po’ boy sandwiches, with lettuce, tomato and pepper relish.

There are new bottomless refills for the collector’s-edition souvenir soda cups, too. The Braden Holtby model is pictured here.

Main concession beer

This is always a heated topic, and I don’t have all the details, but Monumental Sports says its draft beers this season will be approximately 50 percent local or seasonal. There will also be expanded-package beer options, with 15 types of canned beer at 90 percent of the arena’s stands and portable locations. I obviously will attempt to get more specific information in the near future.

Club level concessions

Levy Restaurants runs the premium-seating concessions, and there are also a bunch of developments on that front, including many new menu items at the Acela Club and in executive suites. For people more in my social circle, there is a new concession stand in the club level called Burger & Brews; here’s a rendering.

Among the new club-level concession items: a Stackhouse Burger, a grilled chicken club, Hoffman’s Big Smoke, a D.C. Smokehouse Burger, a Turkey Grind House Burger and pretzel dippers. Here’s the grilled chicken club and the Cuban sandwich, which is one of the new Acela Club offerings.

And I promise more details in the future.
