With two outs in the ninth inning and Jordan Zimmermann working on the first no-hitter in Nationals history, Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich sent a flyball toward the left-center field gap. As Washington rookie left fielder Steven Souza Jr., who misplayed a routine flyball on Friday, gave chase, Zimmermann stepped off the mound, flung his head back and stared up at the sky. He figured his no-hit bid was gone.
“A double,” Zimmermann replied when asked what he thought when the ball left Yelich’s bat. “No-doubt double. And he comes out of nowhere and makes that catch, so I guess whatever he wants, he can have. I’ll buy him anything.”
Here’s a view of Souza’s incredible diving catch from the outfield seats.
