With 55 seconds remaining in the Wizards’ most complete performance of the season — a 107-86 dismantling of the Heat at Verizon Center on Monday — Kevin Seraphin was whistled for a foul while battling for a rebound with Miami’s Hassan Whiteside.
Standing at the end of the bench between John Wall and Kris Humphries, Marcin Gortat was not pleased with the call, which delayed the Wizards’ celebration.
But then the Wizards fans who had stuck around began to cheer. Gortat’s eyes widened as he looked up at the Verizon Center video board, which revealed the reason for the commotion: the Fowl Shot promotion. In the not-to0-distant past, this was one of the few things worth cheering at Wizards games, and it’s apparently every bit as exciting when Washington is winning. If Whiteside missed both free throws, everyone in attendance would win a free Chick-fil-A sandwich.
Gortat really wanted a chicken sandwich to go along with his fourth double-double (not the sandwich variety) in the past five games.
“I want Chick-fil-A,” he appears to say.
Gortat pumped his fist and Wall raised his arms after Whiteside obliged. Perhaps he was hungry, too.
