Bryce Harper pays tribute to Jerry Tarkanian with sweet UNLV jacket

Bryce Harper was born in 1992, two years after the Jerry Tarkanian-coached UNLV men’s basketball team capped a dominating season by obliterating Harper’s beloved Duke Blue Devils, 103-73, in the NCAA championship game.

Still, “The Shark,” who died Wednesday at 84, made an impression on Harper, a Las Vegas native. The Nationals outfielder posted a photo of himself at the Tarkanian statue outside UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center on Wednesday night.

“Legends Never Die” Nobody will ever be better than Tark the “Shark” Thank you for everything you have done for UNLV and the Las Vegas area..You truly are a Legend! #THESHARK#NeverForget@sportscenter@reviewjournal

Harper is wearing a Runnin’ Rebels hat and nifty jacket with the last names of the starters from the 1989-90 championship team: Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, David Butler, Greg Anthony, Anderson Hunt and “The Shark.”

Harper posted a message about Tarkanian on Tuesday as well.

Prayers and blessings to Coach..Nobody better than this man! He is a true hero of Las Vegas! #TarkTheShark#UNLV
