During an interview that will air on Comcast SportsNet this week, Leonsis took a pretty strong stance: that owners should not be in the business of overruling their coaches or general managers.
“I’ve been around the game now for a long, long time,” Leonsis said, in response to a question about meddling. “And there are certain things that you do learn and you do see. But if you break the hierarchy — you have a general manager, you have a coach, you have assistant coaches, you have a captain, you have players — the moment you break that hierarchy, I think you inject needless chaos into the system.
“And truthfully, it means you should fire your general manager or your coach,” Leonsis said. “If you’re making the decisions and you think what you know is more than your coach and general manager, then they can’t work for you. Because the general manager and the coach need to be the end-all and be-all, and be in that cocoon, if you will, with the players.
“And so what I basically do is the players see me hovering around, they know I’m like their biggest cheerleader, they know that I respect them and I care for them as people, not only as players. And I try to create a positive atmosphere, an atmosphere of respect the coach, respect the general manager, respect the ballboy, the massage therapist, respect the community.”
Hierarchy has become something of a buzzword around the Caps facility, where General Manager Brian MacLellan has also preached the importance of respecting such divisions.
“I talk to [Caps President Dick Patrick], and Dick talks to Ted, and we communicate what our goals are and what we want to accomplish,” MacLellan explained to me several weeks ago. “And then I talk to [Coach] Barry [Trotz], Barry talks to the assistant coaches. I mean, it’s just a hierarchy, so we’re all on the same wavelength, the same message is coming from everybody and everybody’s doing their job. I think sometimes if you don’t keep control of that, it gets a little scattered for an organization. …
“You have people inputting on the wrong things, not their area. I want to empower our coaching staff to have a good team, to have all the ammunition that they can have to win a championship. And then I don’t have interference from up top, nobody’s pushing anything. I get to do my job, basically, and I let Barry do his job. He’s the coach. I’m not telling him ‘You’ve got to do this, you’ve got to do that.’ I mean, we talk about stuff, but that’s his job. I think we needed to, as an organization, define those roles specifically.”
And no, none of this makes me think of any other teams, so don’t even bother asking.
