Mark Rypien’s ring from Super Bowl XXII is one of more than 1,400 items up for bid this month at Goldin Auctions. Rypien, a sixth-round pick out of Washington State in 1986, didn’t throw a pass during his first two seasons in the league and watched Doug Williams lead the Redskins to a 42-10 win over the Broncos in January 1988. Rypien would win a second ring — and capture Super Bowl MVP honors — four years later in Washington’s 37-24 win over Buffalo in Super Bowl XXVI.
The highest bid for Rypien’s 1988 ring, which the quarterback originally sold in 2013, was $17,000 as of Thursday morning. The auction, which also includes London Fletcher’s ring from Super Bowl XXXIV and the boxers and T-shirt that Tom Brady wore in “Ted 2” (seriously), runs through Jan. 30.
Goldin reports that Rypien’s ring is the second from the Redskins’ 1988 Super Bowl put up for auction. Cornerback Tim Morrison’s ring sold for just shy of $19,000 in 2007.
