Josh Morgan may have gone full Plaxico. The former H.D. Woodson, Virginia Tech and Washington Redskins wide receiver has reportedly been charged by Virginia authorities after accidentally shooting himself.
According to TMZ Sports, the incident occurred on the evening of Jan. 31, when police officers in an unspecified part of Virginia responded to a report that a man had a self-inflicted gunshot wound. From the website’s account:
“We’re told Morgan claimed he was cleaning the weapon when it accidentally went off … leaving him with non-life threatening injuries.
“He was hospitalized and we’re told he’ll be okay — but now he’s got a new set of problems because he’s been charged with misdemeanor reckless use of a firearm and has a court date in March.
“A rep from Morgan’s camp tells TMZ Sports … ‘He’s fine. It was a simple accident.'”
On Saturday, Morgan posted this message to his Instagram account:
“Facts only … When you’re laid on your back in that hospital bed with tubes in your nose and arms you damn sure not thinking about your degree, your home, your cars, awards, none of the superficial social bulls— is on your mind only the people in your life and the memories you have shared with those people are on your mind I’ve always called them “my reasons for life” & “my only excuses for death” Live Life FOREAL not to be accepted or to fit in with social media and everything society is trying to blind us with these day… Stay Aware Stay True you were bought in this world to be who God wanted you to be don’t die a stranger to him or yourself #BlessAllPpl”
Good to hear from Morgan’s “camp” that he didn’t seriously injure himself, or worse, even if he now is in some legal trouble. His case, of course, brings to mind a 2008 episode involving Plaxico Burress, when the then-Giants wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the leg at a New York nightclub.
Burress wound up spending over a year and a half in jail for his infraction, but he also managed to return to the NFL. It is unclear if the 30-year-old Morgan has a similar goal, having last played in the NFL in 2014 with the Bears.
Morgan, who grew up not far from RFK Stadium, played at Virginia Tech from 2004 to 2007 before becoming a sixth-round draft pick by the 49ers. He played in San Francisco for four seasons before stints in Washington and Chicago.
