The Atlantic 11 men’s college basketball poll is back by, uh, popular demand. (Thanks to the half-dozen or so of you who emailed, tweeted and texted to ask whether the poll was returning this season. And to all the silent Atlantic 11 supporters, I hope you’re excited, too.)

For the uninitiated, the Atlantic 11 is a weekly* ranking of the top 11 men’s basketball teams from among the 27 Division I men’s basketball programs in D.C., Maryland and Virginia, as determined by a loyal contingent of voters. Each week’s poll also includes a healthy dose of team-specific, pithy comments, submitted by said voters. Some of the comments might even merit a chuckle. See last year’s final poll for some examples.

*New polls will be released every other week this season, at least until conference play begins.

The requirements to be a voter are time to fill out a weekly poll through March (if you have to skip a week here and there, no biggie) and a pledge to be objective. In addition to keeping cursory tabs on how Norfolk State is faring in the MEAC and ranking the top 11 teams each week, you’re also invited to submit pith, but that part is entirely optional.

The season tips off on Friday with 17 games involving Atlantic 11 teams, including four intra-Atlantic 11 matchups. I’ve created a viewing guide here. Virginia (No. 8) and Maryland (No. 25) are the only two Atlantic 11 teams to crack the preseason AP top 25, though Virginia Tech is receiving votes. The Cavaliers have finished atop the Atlantic 11 in each of the last two seasons.

If you weren’t a voter last season and are interested in being a voter this year, or if you have any questions about the poll, please email meI’ll send a ballot and voting instructions for the first poll, which will be released on Monday, this weekend.
