Midway through the second half of Tuesday’s game at Xfinity Center, the Maryland men’s basketball team led Illinois by 25 points. The Terps were well on their way to their largest margin of victory in a conference opener since 1974, but there was at least one fan in attendance who was watching the scoreboard intently and had an excuse to be nervous as the Kiss Cam appeared during a media timeout.
If Jeff Wehberg was nervous, he didn’t really show it. After a few standard scenes of couples laughing and smooching to the delight of the sellout crowd, the camera focused on Wehberg and his girlfriend Carly Smith, a 2016 Maryland graduate. Wehberg immediately stood up from his seat, pulled out a ring as he got down on one knee and popped the question to a surprised Smith.
She said “yes” and planted a kiss on Wehberg as the crowd gave the happy couple a standing ovation. Then Testudo arrived for a joyous group hug. Congratulations all around.
