Redskins owner Daniel Snyder was among the many sports figures who donated large sums of money to President Trump’s inaugural festivities, with the Redskins owner making a $1 million contribution on Dec. 16, according to a Federal Election Commission filing.
The lengthy FEC filing, made public this week, showed that Trump’s inaugural committee raised a record $107 million. As The Post reported, the committee has pledged to donate excess funds to charities, although it has not announced details.
Snyder was far from the only owner helping fund the events. The Kraft Group — listing the Patriots address — and Jerry Jones’s Glenstone Limited Partnership — listing the Cowboys address — also made $1 million donations, on the same day as Snyder. Los Angeles Rams owner Stanley Kroenke, Jaguars owner Shad Khan, Jets owner Woody Johnson and Texans owner Bob McNair all made $1 million donations on other dates.
The office of the commissioner of baseball, and NFL Ventures — the league’s for-profit wing — both gave $100,000 to the committee, which also received donations from the Madison Square Garden Company, and from individuals associated with the ownership of the Cubs, Buccaneers and Mets, according to reports.
Snyder’s donation, though, comes at a time when his team could have significant dealings with the Trump administration. As the franchise searches for its next home, there could yet be a movement to bring the Redskins back to the District, via a new venue at the RFK Stadium site. Washington Mayor Muriel E. Bowser recently asked Trump for approval to make major upgrades at that site, which is about to lose its only major tenant in D.C. United. The Obama administration had objections to the Redskins team name, which was thought to be an impediment to any stadium project, but Trump has defended the name, even running an ad appealing to fans who oppose a name change.
Snyder, who donated to a Jeb Bush super-PAC during the presidential campaign, was a guest at one of the exclusive black-tie dinners held in the run-up to Trump’s inauguration.
In any case, having given to the inaugural committee at least allows Snyder to accurately claim that he finally helped fund a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue!
(That was a joke.)
