Good morning, commuters! We’ll be keeping an eye on the roads and rails this morning, reporting any delays or issues — and we will need your help.
If you see or hear about any congestion, delays or problems, tell us in the comments section below or by tweeting @drgridlock.
It’s Columbus Day, a federal holiday, which means there are lots of transit changes impacting commuter buses and rail. No MARC or VRE trains will run, while some buses will run limited service. Read the full rundown here.
We’re still going to keep tabs on the commute for anyone heading to work. The forecast calls for a cloudy start followed by potential showers, according to the Capital Weather Gang.
Metro reports that normal service has resumed on the Blue and Orange lines following an earlier train malfunction at Smithsonian.
Riders should still expect delays and crowding on the Red and Orange lines, as trains are single-tracking due to work. This will last until the system closes tonight at midnight.
And that does it for our morning liveblog. Safe travels.
Blue and Orange Lines riders should expect to encounter delays heading to Largo Town Center and New Carrollton following an earlier train malfunction at Smithsonian.
Even though it’s Columbus Day, many are still heading to work across the region. And some commuters are encountering headaches due to single-tracking on the Red and Orange lines. This single-tracking could lead to crowding and delays at stations. (Metro is running Saturday holiday service on the rails and a Saturday supplemental schedule for buses.)
Here’s what you can expect this morning and through tonight:
Red Line trains are sharing a track between Judiciary Square and Fort Totten. Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. today, trains should arrive at platforms between Shady Grove and Judiciary Square every 13 minutes. After 9 p.m., trains will run between Glenmont and Shady Grove every 26 minutes. Add about 20 minutes to your travel time on the eastern portion of the line; add about 10 minutes if you’re traveling through downtown or on the western side.
Orange Line trains are sharing a track between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly. During the day today, every other train from Vienna will only go as far as Stadium-Armory before turning around. Add about 15 minutes to your trip if you’re east of Stadium-Armory.
