Update: 12:25 p.m.: All lanes of the George Washington Parkway have reopened in both directions following a fatal wreck this morning in the Mount Vernon area.

Original post: 6:53 a.m.

The George Washington Parkway is closed in both directions between Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and Vernon View Drive after a car veered off the roadway this morning.

Police said a driver lost control of the car and drove into the woods at the side of the parkway.

The driver was killed and a passenger has been hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

It remains unknown what caused the driver to lose control, police said.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area. The travel lanes may be closed for some time as police investigate the crash.
