New app offers vehicle safety information

Looking to see whether your ride is safe? The Department of Transportation wants you to know that there’s an app for that. (Remember those “There’s an app for that” commercials? Those were great. And they provided such a seamless way to introduce blog posts about apps.)

A new app called SaferCar offers real-time vehicle safety information drawn from The new app and the site both come from the National Highway Safety Administration.

The app offers a mix of consumer advice, practical help and general safety information. For instance, if you’re shopping for a new vehicle, you can check out the safety ratings. But if you have a car and need to install a child seat, there’s information on installation and inspection. And you can find out about vehicle recalls, with the option to sign up and get a notification if any recalls are issued.

“Timely, accurate, and accessible safety data is the lifeblood of our agency’s work,” David Strickland, the National Highway Safety Administration administrator, said in a statement announcing the app.

Right now, the app is only available for iPhones, iPads and other Apple devices (find a complete list here). An Android version is being developed.

Have you downloaded SaferCar and given it a whirl? Let us know what you think of it in the comments below. And if there’s a comparable app you think people should consider instead, share that, too.
