11:54 a.m. update:

The scene at 16th and U streets has been cleared and the roads around that intersection are now open, according to police.

The intersection at 11th and U streets NW remains closed.

Police have closed multiple blocks around 16th and U streets in Northwest Washington this morning due to a suspicious item.

The item was found at a bus stop at 16th and U streets NW, according to police. As a result, U Street is closed between 15th and 17th streets and 16th Street is closed between Florida Avenue and T Street.

There also were two other incidents not far from this intersection. A pedestrian was struck at 11th and U streets NW at around 10 a.m. The person is critical condition at a local hospital. That intersection remains closed.

And a woman was struck by a vehicle at 16th and W streets NW, just north of the intersection closed by the suspicious package, at around 10:45 a.m. The woman was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. That intersection remains open.

Metro says rail service at the nearby U Street station is not affected by the closures. Metrobuses in the 90 line are going to face delays, according to the transit agency. Bus supervisors are heading to the scene to set up detours.
