A woman injured her knee Monday afternoon after her bag became caught in a Metro train door.

Some social media outlets and other news outlets originally reported that the incident involved a person being struck by a train. That was not the case, Metro officials said.

According to Metro spokesman Dan Stessel a woman “exited the train at Mt. Vernon Square “as the doors were closing.”

He wrote in an e-mail that she “made it off, but her purse did not.” The doors of the train closed on the strap of her purse.

Stessel said she “did not immediately let go of the purse.” He said that when the train started to move, “she let go, lost her balance and fell on the platform.”

She suffered a knee injury, he said that was considered non-life threatening.
