Man struck and killed by Orange Line train

The Washington Post’s Trishula Patel reports that an Orange Line Metro train struck and killed a 21-year-old Massachusetts man who was walking on the tracks outside the East Falls Church stop early Sunday.

Caroline Lukas, a Metro spokeswoman, said the man was hit by a train on its way to the Ballston station shortly before 2 a.m.

Eight passengers on the train — one of the last of the night — were transferred to another train. Metro experienced delays in both directions as trains between East Falls Church and Ballston were single-tracked while officials investigated. Normal service returned when the system opened Sunday morning, Lukas said.

Metro officials are trying to determine why the man was on the tracks.
