Metro said it will operate on a normal schedule Wednesday as large crowds are expected for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

The transit agency recommends taking the rail system to Union Station or Judiciary Square to participate in the march. To get to the Mall, riders should use Foggy Bottom, Farragut West, Farragut North or Archives.

Metro said it does not recommend using Arlington Cemetery because Memorial Bridge will be closed to pedestrian traffic. The Smithsonian stop is also not recommended because of the potential for crowding there, according to Metro officials.

Dan Stessel, a Metro spokesman, said the agency “expects to be able to handle the crowds with our existing capacity.” Ridership in the last week of August tends to be down, with people still on vacation and Congress out of session.

Metro will have additional transit police officers and station managers at key stations near the Mall to help direct people.
