D.C.-area residents are a classy bunch — intelligent, well-schooled with a taste for the finer things in life.
Which might go a long way toward explaining the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s newest SmarTrip card promotion.
WMATA is partnering with The Phillips Collection to offer a set of four limited-edition Vincent van Gogh commemorative SmarTrip cards.
That’s right — your Metro card can be a work of art!
It’s part of a promotion to celebrate the Van Gogh Repetitions exhibit at The Phillips Collection through January 2014.
Think of the reaction you’ll get when you casually flash such van Gogh masterpieces as “The Bedroom at Arles” or “Madame Roulin Rocking the Cradle”.
The limited-edition reusable plastic cards are available for $10. As with the regular SmarTrip cards, they come pre-loaded with $8 in fare value. You can pre-order these little pieces of culture online here or purchase them at Metrorail station dispensers by the end of October.
And there’s more.
You can present your special edition SmarTrip card at The Phillips Collection and get $3 off the $12 admission price as well as 20 percent off gift shop purchases (just in time for the holidays!).
“Vincent van Gogh’s celebrated paintings bring joy to so many people around the world; and we are thrilled that art lovers have responded so positively to Van Gogh Repetitions, now on view at The Phillips Collection,” said Sarah Schaffer, director of marketing and communications for The Phillips Collection in a press release announcing the promotion. “Partnering with Metro to produce these special fare cards seemed like the perfect way celebrate the exhibition’s success—by putting a little bit of van Gogh’s magic into the hands of those who live, work and play in the District.”
The van Gogh cards are just one of a number of special edition SmarTrip passes WMATA has offered. In January, the transit agency had a special Inauguration edition SmarTrip card.
