The intersection of Old Lee Highway and Hilltop Road has reopened after an early morning accident that police said left two people dead.

About 1:50 a.m. Monday, Fairfax police said a police officer tried to pull over the driver of a car for allegedly driving while intoxicated, and the vehicle fled the area and crashed. Police said the car crashed into a tree.

Two of the people in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Officer Bud Walker. A third person was transported with life-threatening injuries to an area hospital.

Police have not released the individuals’ names because their relatives have not been notified.

The road reopened about 9 a.m.

Fairfax County police said Monday that an accident closed Old Lee Highway at Hilltop Road near Merrifield.

It was not immediately known when the road, often used as a cut-through between Interstate 66 and Lee Highway, would reopen, officials said.

The accident occurred just after 1 a.m. Police said investigators were still on the scene as of 6 a.m. Details of what happened were not available, but initial reports showed that one vehicle appeared to have gone into a ditch.

It was also not immediately known how many people were involved in the accident, although police said at least one person was transported to an area hospital.
