A full service spa. An iPad bar. Reagan National Airport is upgrading its image — big time.

The new features are part of an effort to revamp the airport’s shopping and dining options with a eye toward getting passengers to spend a bit more cash before they fly off to their destination.

“We believe the new shops and restaurants will transform the terminal into a more popular destination for passengers flying at Reagan,” said Steve Baker, vice president for business administration at the Airports Authority.

Details are still being worked out, but folks who come to the airport will be able to check e-mail and perhaps play a game of Candy Crush on one of several publicly available iPads. Those seeking relaxation could unwind at the full-service spa. The revamped offerings are set to come in Spring 2015, an airport spokesman said.

If you’ve flown through Reagan’s Terminal A, then you already know that the area,  part of the airport’s original footprint, is undergoing a $37 million makeover to make the space lighter and more spacious for the millions who fly through its gates each year.  New flooring and additional windows have been installed. The security area, known as the banjo, is being widened to accommodate the record numbers of passengers who now use the space.

The newer Terminal B and C also are getting new shopping and dining options. Ben’s Chili Bowl will be opening, and longtime favorite Legal Sea Foods will be returning to the airport. Spanx will also be among the new retailers coming to the airport.

A record number of passengers — 20.4 million — flew through Reagan National in 2013, but Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall was the area’s busiest airport in 2013.
