Sales of electric cars in the D.C. area increased by 21 percent in the tail end of last year, according to ChargePoint, a company which maintains charging stations for such cars.

The region ranked second behind Atlanta in its jump in electric car sales in the fourth quarter, ChargePoint said, based on records it got from state motor vehicle registration agencies. Atlanta led the nation with more than 3,000 sales, a 52 percent increase, followed by Washington, D.C. Portland came in third, just ahead of Los Angeles, with San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago, Seattle, Miami and Detroit following close behind.
