A 10,000-pound barrier of concrete fell Wednesday morning off a truck into the northbound lanes of Route 123 in Fairfax Station, forcing authorities to close the roadway.

The slab of concrete and steel that police said is likely used in construction sites or roadwork fell in the middle of Route 123 northbound, also known as Ox Road. Police have closed three lanes of Ox Road at Silverbrook Road. Only one of the turn lanes was getting through the area, Fairfax County Police said.

The incident occurred just before 5 a.m., police said. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, but police said the barrier seemed to have broken into pieces and fallen off a tractor trailer bed.

Crews are trying to use heavy-duty cranes to move the concrete slabs from the scene.
