Montgomery plans bus fare changes

Ride On is proposing a new fare hike for fiscal year 2015.

The Montgomery County transit system says the proposed changes, which will set the cost of a regular bus trip at $1.75, will keep the Ride On fares in line with the fares set by Metro.

Last month the Metro board approved fare increases for the regional transit system. Metrobus riders now pay $1.60 when using a SmarTrip card and $1.80 when paying cash. The board voted to eliminate the cash surcharge and set a flat $1.75 fare for all riders. Metro’s new fares will go into effect in July.

Ride On bus users also pay $1.60 with a SmarTrip and $1.80 in cash. The county’s transit agency is proposing to adjust the bus fares to a flat $1.75, just like Metro.

Other proposed changes include increasing the SmarTrip fare of the Express Route 70 from $3.65 to $4.00 and raising by 15 cents the transfer fare from Metrorail to Ride On using a SmarTrip, to go from $1.10 to $1.25.

The Montgomery County Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed changes on April 22 at 1:30 pm in the Council Office Building, 100 Maryland Ave., Rockville.
