A Pepco contractor dropped a steel plate Wednesday afternoon, causing an 8-inch water main to break and shutting down River Road in Bethesda.

Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission spokeswoman Lyn Riggins described the incident and said it occurred about  1 p.m. She said that workers put the main back in service  about 6 p.m., but the road remained closed between Little Falls Parkway and Willard Avenue while they completed other repair work.
