A man was fatally injured in a three-car crash late Wednesday afternoon on the George Washington Parkway. The incident closed the northbound lanes of an eight-mile span from Spout Run to the Capital Beltway for several hours as authorities investigated the incident.
One person was in each of the three cars involved in the crash, said Lelani Woods, a U.S. Park Police spokeswoman. Earlier Wednesday, a park police dispatcher said a car crossed from the southbound lanes to the northbound side of the road near the Spout Run exchange and struck another car, causing it to flip over. The person in that car was trapped and needed to be transported to a hospital by helicopter, the police dispatcher said. The man was pronounced dead Wednesday evening, Woods said, but his name was not immediately released.

It was not clear how the third car was involved in the crash. One driver was uninjured, and the other was transported to a hospital. The northbound lanes of the parkway were reopened at about 10 p.m.
