Some of the Route 1 lanes through Laurel are scheduled to either close temporarily or be redirected Monday night for a new phase of work on Maryland’s Intercounty Connector project.
Long-term impact: The right lane of northbound Route 1 between Contee Road and the Muirkirk Road bridge will shift west until fall to allow crews to work in the closed lane. The new northbound right lane will pass between two work zones.
Short-term effect: To set up the new work zones, the Maryland State Highway Administration crews will temporarily close the two northbound lanes, and one lane of that traffic will be redirected onto what is normally a southbound lane. This set-up work will get underway at 6 p.m. Monday, when workers close one lane in each direction. It should be done by 6 a.m. Tuesday.
The nearby alternatives for north-south traffic are Interstate 95 and the Baltimore Washington Parkway.
ICC link: This is the zone where the last, eastern-most phase of the Intercounty Connector will connect with Route 1. This phase of the project got underway in mid-summer 2012 and is now scheduled to be done by early fall.
