Crews continued to work to fix a gas leak in Northeast that caused the eastbound lanes of New York Avenue to be closed.

The road had been closed in both directions in the 500 block of New York Avenue. By 1 p.m., the westbound lanes had reopened, but the eastbound lanes remained closed.

Officials said they expected the problem to be resolved in the coming hours and they anticipated that the roadway would reopen on the eastbound side by the Monday evening rush hour.

Initially, a Washington Gas spokesman had said the damage was to a six-inch main. But later officials said the damage was to a two-inch main.

It remained unclear if New York Avenue’s eastbound lanes would be reopened by Monday evening’s rush hour.

Just before 1 p.m., a spokesman for Washington Gas said crews were on the scene and had turned off the gas at the site. He said there was damage to a six-inch main. The cause is not yet known, according to Rodriguez.

He said crews continued to make repairs and added he could not “speculate on when the repairs will be done.”
