A Lynchburg woman, who packed a loaded handgun, was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at Reagan National Airport on Wednesday.
The gun was loaded with seven rounds plus one in the chamber, according to a TSA press release. It was ninth handgun found at the airport’s checkpoints so far this year; in 2014, TSA officers detected 14 guns.
A TSA officer discovered the handgun as the woman’s bag passed through an X-ray machine’s conveyor belt. The gun was confiscated by authorities and the woman, who was heading to catch a flight to Memphis, was cited by Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police on weapons charges.
Lisa Farbstein, a TSA spokeswoman, said the woman was later allowed to board her flight — without the gun.
