Typical Wednesday morning traffic vs. pre-Thanksgiving getaway traffic

My, how different a Wednesday morning view of Washington-area traffic can look.

A quick look at Google’s traffic maps shows little traffic and few major hiccups Wednesday — typically known as the busiest travel day for the Thanksgiving Day holiday.

Take the same view around 8 a.m. on a typical Wednesday in the Washington region and the roads look much busier — with more red lines showing traffic and delays.

Traffic experts have said holiday travel typically hits the D.C. area as early as the Sunday before Thanksgiving and the impact continues until the Monday after. The most difficult getaway days for heavy traffic are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
