The Virginia Department of Transportation plans to temporarily close all lanes on northbound Interstate 395 after midnight Friday night to place girders for a pedestrian bridge at Seminary Road in Alexandria.

This is one part of a set of transportation projects designed to make travel easier around the nearby Mark Center, where many federal employees were transferred under the Base Realignment and Closure program (BRAC). The other parts include the auxiliary lane that opened in February on northbound I-395 between Duke Street and Seminary Road and the ramp under construction between the I-395 High Occupancy Vehicle lanes and Seminary Road. The entire project is scheduled to be done by the end of January.

The weekend work involves placing two 175-foot long, 100-ton girders for the new pedestrian bridge over I-395. VDOT will close lanes on northbound I-395 and the nearby roads starting at 9:30 p.m. Friday and continuing till about 9 a.m. Saturday.

The lane closing sequence on the interstate will begin with the shutdown of one lane at 9:30 p.m. and then a second lane at 10:30 p.m., leaving one lane open till after midnight when there will be two separate closings of all the lanes for up to 20 minutes each time. The section of the HOV lanes north of Edsall Road will be open at 9 p.m. for I-395 drivers heading on to points in Arlington and the District.

Local travel on Seminary Road and North Van Dorn Street will be affected during these overnight hours. Here are the detours:

  • Westbound Seminary Road traffic heading to I-395 North will continue westbound on Seminary Road over I-395, then follow a detour to North Beauregard Street to King Street to I-395 North.
  • Eastbound Seminary Road traffic on the rotary level heading to I-395 North will proceed onto eastbound Seminary Road, then turn left at Library Lane, follow signs to Kenmore Avenue take North Van Dorn Street northbound to westbound King Street West and follow signs to I-395 North.
  • The northbound lanes on North Van Dorn Street will be closed at Seminary Road, and traffic will turn right on Kenmore Avenue, then right on Seminary Road, left on Library Lane, follow signs to Kenmore Avenue and go to North Van Dorn Street.
  • The southbound lanes on North Van Dorn Street will be closed at Seminary Road, and traffic will turn left at Kenmore Avenue, right onto Seminary Road, west over I-395, left at North Beauregard Street, left at Sanger Avenue and back to North Van Dorn Street.

If bad weather interferes, the work will be rescheduled for Saturday night.
