A Fairfax man was intercepted by airport security at Reagan National on Sunday when he attempted to carry a 9mm handgun onto a plane, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said.

The gun was detected by a checkpoint X-ray machine by TSA officers, who summoned Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Police. The gun was confiscated and Sebastian L. Gorka, 45, was charged with a weapons offense.

It marked the second time this year that a weapon was confiscated at a Reagan National checkpoint, the TSA said.  It said an Alexandria, Va., man, Rojas B. Sarmiento, 45, was caught with a loaded 9mm gun on Jan. 13. He also was charged with a weapons offense, authorities said. Last year, 14 firearms were intercepted at Reagan National checkpoints.
